Iranian government spokesperson Ali Rabiei said too much fear of the novel coronavirus was likely to pose a significant threat to the public. Rabiei was speaking at a joint news conference with Iranian Deputy Minister of Health Iraj Harirchi in Tehran on Monday.

The officials denied claims of a cover-up over the outbreak of disease as the number of confirmed deaths in Iran rose to 12.

"Be sure that the number of people who die and lose their lives from any corner of the country will be announced," said government spokesperson Ali Rabiei.

Deputy Minister of Health Harirchi stressed that the Iranian government has chosen 'the policy of honesty' regarding the handling of the outbreak.

The Iranian government ordered schools, universities and cultural institutions to remain closed for 10 days in several provinces to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.
