Rio de Janeiro Take Part in Blessing of Sambadrome Ahead of Brazil's Carnival

Rio de Janeiro Take Part in Blessing of Sambadrome Ahead of Brazil's Carnival Followers of Afro-Brazilian religions of Umbanda and Candomble blessed Rio de Janeiro's Sapucaí sambadrome in a colorful cleansing ritual on Sunday, a week ahead of the official start of Carnival.

Top samba school Mangueira, the champion of the parade in 2019, did its rehearsals after the blessing ceremony.

One of the founders of the cleansing ceremony, Veralucia Brito said the decade-old ritual was "to purify and bring good energy to our people from Rio de Janeiro that suffers a lot."

Pouring rain did not wash away the crowd's enthusiasm that cheered during the cleansing ritual and Mangueira's rehearsal.

This year, Rio's samba schools will parade on the sambadrome on Sunday 23rd and Monday 24th of February.
