Genoa shoppers stock up amid Italy virus fears

Genoa shoppers stock up amid Italy virus fears (24 Feb 2020) Shoppers in Genoa rushed to supermarkets on Monday to stock up with basic products amid fears of coronavirus contagion reaching Liguria from a cluster in bordering Lombardy.

Pasta, toilet paper, tissues, kitchen roll, canned vegetables, bottled water and hand-sanitizing products were nearly sold out in a large supermarket.

A shopper was seeing wearing a mask, and unusually long queues formed.

An elderly man who visited the supermarket was in shock.

"The pasta shelves are empty! What's happening? Not even when World War II started was there such panic. Oh my God!" he said upon leaving.
